George Buck has been working as an Adjunct Professor for the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) and the College of General Studies, University of Pittsburgh, since 2008. He teaches the Theories of Leadership class which is a required course for the Leadership certificate. He also developed and teaches an online Theories of Leadership course for GSPIA. More recently, he became a liaison for this class in The University of Pittsburgh’s College in High School Program.
His aim is not just to teach the theories of leadership but to bring them alive and to make them practical and relevant to everyday life. A mentor encouraged him to enroll in a MSOL Program at Geneva College, which broadened his understanding of effective leadership, and instilled a passion to teach and equip future leaders.
He contends that most people don’t understand what true leadership is, and believes that leadership is more about how to be rather than how to do. Good leaders must first become good servants and they will be remembered more for what they do for others, not themselves. It is about the little things, which can have a huge impact. Manners are the lubricating oil of an organization.
